Why families choose personal tuition

Whether it's Key Stage 1 foundations, 11+ and independent school preparation, or keeping pace through Key Stage 3, most children who fall behind haven't lost ability — they've lost confidence, or missed a step somewhere along the way. What they need is focused practice, honest feedback, and someone who notices exactly where they get stuck.

  • i.

    Full attention, every session

One-to-one, or a small group of two to three children at a similar level — never a classroom, never lost in the crowd.

  • ii.

A plan, not a pile of worksheets

Every child starts with an assessment, so the sessions that follow work on what actually needs work — not a generic scheme.

  • iii.

    Wherever suits your family

I'll travel to your home, or you're welcome at mine. Online sessions are available too, for whenever that's easier.

One-to-one or small group

Both are run properly — the only question is which fits your child and your calendar.

One-to-one

Fully tailored

Every minute of the session is spent on your child alone — the pace, the questions, and the pacing adjust in real time. This is usually the right call closer to the exam, or where a child needs a confidence rebuild.

Small group

Two to three children

Grouped by ability, not just age, so the pace still suits everyone in the room. A little healthy competition and shared momentum, at a lower cost per session, without losing individual feedback.

At your home, or at mine

I teach locally and I'm happy to travel to you for sessions, or you're welcome at my house if that fits your routine better. We can also work over video call when that's more convenient — whatever keeps sessions consistent works best.

After school & weekends

Sessions are scheduled around the school day and weekend routines, so tutoring fits around your family rather than the other way round.

Every stage, one tutor

Rather than starting over with someone new each time your child moves up a stage, sessions grow with them — from first foundations to the 11+ and into Key Stage 3.

Years 1–2 · Key Stage 1

Foundations

Confident reading, phonics and early number sense — built properly now, so nothing needs correcting later.

Years 3–6 · KS2 & 11+

Exam-ready

The core of 11+ and independent school preparation, built into a plan for your target exam date.

Years 7–8 · Key Stage 3

Momentum

Keeping pace after the 11+ — consolidating English and maths fundamentals before GCSE options begin.

What we cover

The same core skills, taught to the standard the right stage actually needs.

  • i.

    English

Comprehension, creative writing, grammar and punctuation — reading with the exam's eye, not just for pleasure.

  • ii.

    Maths

Arithmetic fluency, reasoning and multi-step problem-solving, built to be fast and accurate under time pressure.

  • iii.

    Verbal reasoning

All standard question types, drilled until the format itself stops being the obstacle.

  • iv.

    Non-verbal reasoning

Pattern, sequence and spatial reasoning — a skill that responds fast to the right practice.

About Bright Beginner

Bright Beginner is one tutor, working with a small number of families each term — so every child gets a genuinely personal plan, not a generic scheme of work. Sessions run from Key Stage 1 foundations right through to the 11+ and Key Stage 3, so a family can stay with the same tutor as their child grows, rather than starting over each time a stage changes.

Over 5 students I've tutored have gone on to gain places at grammar schools as prestigious as Tiffin and QE — including my own son. That result came from the same approach every family here gets: a proper assessment, a plan built for that child, and sessions that focus on technique as much as subject knowledge.

I'm DBS checked, so you can feel comfortable with sessions at either home. Most children who fall behind haven't lost ability — they've lost confidence, or missed a step somewhere along the way. That's what the assessment, the plan, and every session after it are built to find and fix.
